NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Pfizer Inc. on Monday announced that its erectile dysfunction drug Viagra will be available for sale in the United States on prescription only in the form of a generic drug.
Viagra, or sildenafil, is the brand name for the drug sildenafil, which is used to treat erectile dysfunction. It is also the generic name for Pfizer Inc.'s (Pfizer) erectile dysfunction drug Viagra.
Pfizer said its decision to license Viagra to Eli Lilly and Company is the result of an internal review of the Pfizer drug research program, which is conducted by the National Institutes of Health, as well as discussions between Lilly and its drug company, GlaxoSmithKline PLC.
"We believe that the decision to license and sell Viagra will be in the best interest of the patient and the general public," said Daniel Williams, Pfizer's chairman and chief executive. "We've been told by our representatives that our representatives will only have the opportunity to discuss with us the process for obtaining a prescription of Viagra."
Pfizer's move to sell Viagra came after a study showed that patients who took Viagra had higher rates of ED, which can cause impotence and heart problems.
"I'm very pleased with the results of the study," said Dr. Nachum Katan, a cardiologist and director of the Cleveland Clinic's Sexual Medicine Center.
Viagra is the brand name for the drug sildenafil, which is also used to treat erectile dysfunction, Katan said.
